THE HOWARD MILLER DIFFERENCES

People ask, "What makes the difference between just a case, and heirloom quality construction that is built to last for generations?"

How can you tell the difference? Let's look at what we call the Howard Miller Difference:

1. Each case has a structural cross member at the top and inside the back for added support and rigidity. You can reach up through the sound escapement opening and feel it. Only Howard Miller does this on every clock it manufactures.

2. The door receives more stress than any part of the case. Look at the top arch of a Howard Miller door: The door is always built of solid one-pices construction for stability and strength. Howard Miller never weakens the door with additional joint and pieced construction in this area.

3. Only Howard Miller uses both screws and glue to attach the columns to the case. This eliminates any possibility of separation in the home. You can open the door and feel the recessed screws on the inside of each case behind the front columns.

4. Look at the base construction. The base is a solid platform extending 360 degrees around the case. You can reach down and feel the back of the base. It's always solid, all the way to the floor, for added support. This construction strengthens the case and reduces the risk of damage when the clock is moved.

These are but four of the many differences that make Howard Miller Floor Clocks built for tomorrow, as well as today. These are differences you can easily see and feel.

Bookmatching - A Cut Above

In the world of high-end furniture, buyers may frequently encounter the term bookmatching. It is a term to describe specially sawn pieces of wood used to fabricate components. Bookmatching yields nearly identical half pieces that are typically joined along a center line. When the boards are laid down face up, like opening a book, the faces that are exposed are mirror images of each other. When joined in this way, the results can be spectacular.

Besides being aesthetically pleasing, bookmatching more importantly provides predictability in terms of expansion and contraction characteristics of the finished component. The best bookmatched stock comes from resawing material that is perfectly quartersawn, that is to say that the annual rings are perfectly perpendicular to the face plane of the board. The less perpendicular the grain line, the less the bookmatch will reveal mirrored pieces; and the less predictably the pieces will respond in the drying process.

Is the extra cost of bookmatching worth it? Howard Miller thinks so.
